South Adams Elementary

Design Build - South Adams Elementary Project

This project was a new facility to consolidate and replace 3 old buildings in 3 surrounding towns. This was a design-build collaboration with DVPE and CSO Architects.

  • Project Cost: $19,967,689
  • Cost per Square Foot: $133
  • Total Square Feet: 150,500
  • Capacity: 1,025 Students
  • Completion Date: 2009
  • Grades: Pre-K-8
  • Square Feet per Student: 283
  • Construction Delivery Method: Design Build
  • Awards/Features: Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) 2009 Award of Honor

The building is arranged by grade level with the shared spaces (cafeteria, gymnasium, media center, and music suite) in the center accessible to all the grade levels. The new building shares a campus with the high school presenting some interesting design challenges to appropriately segregate student and automobile traffic.

The new building heating and air conditioning is fed from the high school mechanical room. This design innovation eliminated the need for a separate boiler room in the new building and allowed for a downsized total HVAC plant for the campus, as there is shared redundancy between the buildings.

South Adams achieved an Energy StarŪ score above 90 in its first year of operation. This makes South Adams 30% more efficient than an average school building in the state of Indiana and in the top 5% of K-12 buildings in the nation.

South Adams Elementary School was also the first design build integrated delivery public school project in the State of Indiana. CSO Architects served as the design architect on the projects, and together, with its team members, delivered an on-time, on-budget school for the South Adams district. The early knowledge of project scope and the strong communication among team members allowed the project to proceed without problem.
